December-2025; Sue Granzella’s book Pushed to the Edge: Teachers’ Stories From the Culture Wars will be published by The New Press in early April, 2026. The backstory: Sue Granzella recently retired from teaching elementary school when the Proud Boys invaded Drag Story Hour at the San Lorenzo Library back in June of 2022. That lit her on fire, and so she set out to travel her home state of California, meeting with public school teachers and librarians who had a story to tell about being an educator during the age of culture wars.
As you might imagine, most of what they told her revolves around:
- discriminatory treatment of LGBTQ+ students and teachers;
- banning of Critical Race Theory (code for “stop teaching Black History“); and
- book bans.
She interviewed the educators, wrote their stories, and wove them together with vignettes from her own teaching career. Her hope is that by sharing these stories, more people will understand the essential work of educators, and will support them as they educate our future leaders.
