Branches and Fences

Esme DeVault

looking out

my bedroom window

I see                         you

throw branches

over the fence

into our yard.

“It’s their damn tree!”

you shout,

“Why should everybody else have to fucking pay for it?”

I quietly close

the window

and turn

away.

later,

I write               you a note.

Hello neighbor!

I was very sorry

to see you so upset

this morning.

Please come by

any time

so we can talk about it.

I mail the note to

you

in a pretty pink card

afraid

that if I knock

on your door

you        will        spit

in my

face.

I feel better now,

perhaps in part because I know

that                              you will never knock

on my door

as                                  you

are far too afraid

of my dog.
